‘Music was born in Africa’ – Natasha Shyrose

For anyone who’s had the chance of listening to the melodies of the early 2000s, they’d know that music in Tanzania has had a transition in flavour. Bang! got a chance to catch up with the pop artist who has had a bustling start in the musical industry in Tanzania but had also witnessed a silent hiatus. Ten years later, she’s back to reclaim her crown.

Natasha Shyrose is one of the first pop female artists of Tanzania. She got her first break with her single Sijui Niseme, a project by Clouds Fm ‘Smooth Vibes’ Asubuhi ya 2000.

Shyrose’s musical journey began at the age of 14, where famous personalities like John Delinga, DJ of Radio One and Ruge Mutahaba from Clouds Media Group took notice of her.

Shyrose moved to Norway to find life opportunity and study. Though Shyrose holds her Masters in Neuroscience and Psychology, she also pursues fashion design as a line of profession and continues to reign in the world of music! Shyrose’s multi-faceted professionalism doesn’t end as she also lyrically composes herself in writing music.

Today, Shyrose together with her husband Stig Rindvolla are the owners of the studio ‘Waterfly Music Production’ that caters to creating music and commercial advertisements. The production studio envisions in working with the East African Artists.

“One of our aims is to give part of our production to the artists at home to benefit from the high quality sound,” Shyrose says.

Music is something that has always been cheering Shyrose ever since her childhood. One of the reasons she started to write her own music was the endless ideas of melody, rhythm and texts that inspired her all the time. Shyrose wishes to take her music to the international level because she believes music was born in Africa. “There are plenty of ideas from Africa that can pop up the music industry, even abroad,” she states.

Though she took a hiatus from the Tanzanian musical arena, Shyrose seems to have reinvented herself and hopes to rejuvenate her status in the music industry in Tanzania. Some of the local artists she hopes to work with are; Ay, X-plastaz, Wakazi Wasirra, Mwasiti, Nahreel and Ray C. She has, however, had the opportunity of working with international acts such as Jimmy Velas from Brazil, Konshens from Jamaica, Mc Dynamite and K-One from Norway. She was also featured on a project of Adidas UK with Miss Sarah Young, Mc Dynamite and Trondheim Reggae/Hip Hop Massive.

Natasha Shyrose released her first album in June 2013 by the name Born To Shine, which features 12 songs, half being in Swahili. Her style varies according to the inspiration that comes into her mind while she composes her music. From her album you get a mix of genres like reggae, pop, salsa, rock of all kinds (English and Swahili), and a bit of Karamajong (Northern Ugandan language). Her aim is to compile extra songs and make full Swahili Album before she performs at different concerts in Africa!
